I’ve been a fan of the nest thermostat ever since it came out and while I skipped on the 2nd generation. The 3rd generation nest has more than enough new features to warrant an upgrade. Lets go through some of the new features it has:
It’s still shaped like a Hockey Puck, which is awesome, because Canada loves hockey.
It’s a bit slimmer but has has larger and sharper display which means you can read it from a reasonable distance from across the room, especially if you have the clock mode on.
Still the easiest non-destructive way to save energy in your home according to various independent studies that show that nest saves your energy bill by up to 15%.
Bluetooth support and Geo-fencing technology, more on that in a later post.
It works well with other nest devices such as Nest Protect smoke/CO alarm and the Nest Cam Indoor and Outdoor security cameras.
It has seven more temperature sensors than the original Nest, now you have 10 sensors plus humidity, ambient light, and activity sensors. Why are there activity sensors? so that when you enter the room it detects your presence and lights up giving you a visual cue about temperature and other things. This is called Farsight and we love it. It literally lights up when you enter the room.
Still easy to install but if you don’t want to install it yourself, there is a big chance that there is a nest pro in your area that can come over and install it for you. We recommend HAT360, we hear they are good :-) .
And one more thing, you can still control it from your mobile phone or give it instruction if you have a Google home speaker in your house or an Amazon Alexa. An excellent review of the 3rd generation Nest thermostat on PC mag is worth a read, give it a go here
