7 things that are great about the 3rd generation Nest Thermostat

I’ve been a fan of the nest thermostat ever since it came out and while I skipped on the 2nd generation. The 3rd generation nest has more than enough new features to warrant an upgrade. Lets go through some of the new features it has:

  1. It’s still shaped like a Hockey Puck, which is awesome, because Canada loves hockey.

  2. It’s a bit slimmer but has has larger and sharper display which means you can read it from a reasonable distance from across the room, especially if you have the clock mode on.

  3. Still the easiest non-destructive way to save energy in your home according to various independent studies that show that nest saves your energy bill by up to 15%.

  4. Bluetooth support and Geo-fencing technology, more on that in a later post.

  5. It works well with other nest devices such as Nest Protect smoke/CO alarm and the Nest Cam Indoor and Outdoor security cameras.

  6. It has seven more temperature sensors than the original Nest, now you have 10 sensors plus humidity, ambient light, and activity sensors. Why are there activity sensors? so that when you enter the room it detects your presence and lights up giving you a visual cue about temperature and other things. This is called Farsight and we love it. It literally lights up when you enter the room.

  7. Still easy to install but if you don’t want to install it yourself, there is a big chance that there is a nest pro in your area that can come over and install it for you. We recommend HAT360, we hear they are good :-) .

And one more thing, you can still control it from your mobile phone or give it instruction if you have a Google home speaker in your house or an Amazon Alexa. An excellent review of the 3rd generation Nest thermostat on PC mag is worth a read, give it a go here

The case for a smart home

Tranform your home into a smart home and increase it’s value, security efficiency and convenience.

Tranform your home into a smart home and increase it’s value, security efficiency and convenience.

There are many reasons why you should invest in making your Home smarter, here are some of them:

  1. Security: CCTV , smart doorbells, fire and smoke detection alarms and generally home protection technologies are now cheap enough for the average consumer to consider them. While we encourage you to have a dog, because dogs are awesome, dogs need to sleep and rest too and installing a home security system will ensure that your house and belongings stay safe and should something happen to them, you will be able to provide enough evidence to law enforcement that helps get those family belongings fast.

  2. Efficiency and cost effectiveness: No one wants to keep the heater on when he’s outside the house. Your electrical and water appliances should be one to keep the groceries at the right temperature, the rest of the house does not need to be costing you money as it sits around waiting for you. A smart internet connected thermostat that is controlled right from your mobile phone can help you turn off the heating as you leave on the way to work right as you exit your driveway, which brings us to our next point

  3. Convenience: Honey , did you we leave the lights on? Did we leave the heater on? No one wants to drive back 20 miles to the house to make sure certain appliances are ON or OFF. Just use your mobile phone to open the driveway door to the amazon delivery guy. Or open the door to that relatives how just happened to come to town unannounced and let them enjoy your house until you get there.

  4. Money: While it may seem that you’re spending money on your house when you invest in smart home technologies. many studies state that smart home features can boost your home’s resale value by up to 5%—that's $15,000 on a $300,000 home.
